About North Oak Cliff
North Oak Cliff is less a single neighborhood than a collection of them. Spread across the bluffs just southwest of Downtown Dallas, it includes historic districts, conservation districts, and quiet pockets of homes, each with its own character, architecture, and sense of community. This broad search is the best place to start if you love the idea of Oak Cliff but have not yet settled on a particular street.
A Town of Its Own
Oak Cliff began as a separate town. In 1887, Thomas Marsalis and John Armstrong bought land on the west side of the Trinity River and began selling lots for what they envisioned as an elite residential suburb. Oak Cliff incorporated in 1890 and was annexed by the City of Dallas in 1903, by a margin of just eighteen votes. That independent history still shows in the area's older homes, its street grid, and a strong local identity that residents are quick to share.
